Remembering the Wisdom you receive
Why do we forget wisdom? We’ve all had those moments when we suddenly realize something deeply insightful, something that feels like a huge revelation. We think, “Wow, I’m never going to forget this. It’s pure gold!” And yet, somehow, we do. So, why does that happen?
Here’s my take: you receive a little treat in the form of wisdom so valuable that it feels like it should be tattooed in your mind forever. You try to hold onto it, but eventually, it slips away. Why? Because receiving wisdom is just the first step. The next step is to embody it, to live it, to integrate it into your daily life and your body. Without that integration, it becomes easy to forget. You’re not living the wisdom. You’re distracted with other things, and naturally, it fades from your consciousness.
After Receiving Wisdom
The problem is, we’re not often taught how to integrate the wisdom we receive. There’s no universal recipe for it - and it also depends on the kind of wisdom. Some wisdom is practical, some is spiritual, some emotional - each type requires a different approach. You need to find your own way to integrate it, and that’s where the fun lies. Sure, you can look at how others embody the same wisdom, but just because it works for them doesn’t mean it will work for you. Witness others, be inspired, try things out, and discover what doesn’t work. In the process, you’ll get closer to finding what does work for you.
If you stop trying to integrate the wisdom, you’ll forget it. And when you forget, all that valuable insight goes to waste. You can’t pass it on, because the only way to truly pass it on is to remember it. If you forget it, you lose the ability to share it with others. Even if you remember it intellectually, you’re only able to pass it on in an intellectual way. And let’s be honest - intellectual knowledge alone doesn’t have much depth. Sure, people can know something, but without the depth of lived experience, it’s easily forgotten.
Knowledge vs Embodied Wisdom
That’s why it’s so important to embody the wisdom you receive, however that looks for you. Maybe you’ll use a combination of methods, or maybe you’ll discover a unique approach that works for you. The key is to make it yours, to integrate it deeply into your life.
Sharing the Wisdom
Once you’ve embodied the wisdom, your responsibility is to share it. And no, not just to keep it to yourself. That’s selfish. Very selfish, in fact. Wisdom is meant to be shared, not hoarded. When you have true wisdom, it’s your duty to pass it on - to spread it, to help others grow. Because life isn’t about accumulating wisdom and keeping it locked away. It’s about living it, and then giving it back to the world. At least that’s how I see it.
